Only 85 miles south of Key West, FL, and very distant from his hometown in the suburbs of Chicago, the island of Cuba was the perfect haven for the American writer Ernest Hemingway. Drawn by the sweltering tropical weather and the sizzling sound of his favorite bars in Old Havana, the Nobel-prize winning US writer started to shuttle back and forth between the US and Havana until he finally decided to settle down. In an effort to remain closed to his favorite bars and inspirational source that made him write his world-famous novels, like the town of Cojímar, he stayed at the Ambos Mundos Hotel several times, stating My Daiquiri in El Floridita and my Mojito in La Bodeguita. But it was not long before the end of the 1930´s when he decided to purchase this 15-acre estate, 25-km away from downtown, Finca Vigía.  This half-day tour will allow you to explore the island that inspired the writer and exchange with people who keep Hemingway’s legacy alive, starting with a bus ride to his former residence, Finca Vigía, now transformed into a museum. This beautiful property has been completely restored and will allow you to know how the famous novelist lived and worked in a unique way. Through the open windows you can admire the place where Hemingway lived and where he wrote such important literary works such as «For whom the bell tolls» and «The Old Man and the Sea» among others. Finca Vigía is located in the neighborhood of San Francisco de Paula, which belongs to the Municipality of San Miguel del Padrón, located on the outskirts of Havana. You will take a short panoramic tour and you will see the Monument to La Virgen del Camino (The Virgin of the Pathway), while you learn more about this popular and dynamic neighborhood. La Virgen del Camino has great significance in the culture and traditions of the local people of San Miguel del Padrón who often devote their offerings. Nearby you can see wineries, schools, all kinds of small private businesses, and farmer’s markets, where locals come to buy the staple. After visiting the Hemingway Museum at Finca Vigía, you will continue your ride to the former fishermen´s village of Cojímar where Hemingway used to dock his boat Pilar. Afterwards, we will take photos of the monument raised to pay homage to Ernest Hemingway as we hear the constant lapping of the waves on the shore at the nearby local Malecón. Then time to emulate the writer in his daily routine, because this was Hemingway´s old stomping ground in Havana. We will make a stop at Las Terrazas de Cojímar to taste a cocktail, this is a famous bar frequented by Hemingway and his friends, among them who was also his skipper Gregorio Fuentes, Ernest Hemingway´s inspirational figure for his character in The Old Man and the Sea. Once at Las Terrazas you will also have time to interact with this fishing community. Finally, on your way back to the Old Havana, we are going to head our steps to the famous bar La Bodeguita del Medio, Ambos Mundos Hotel, where Hemingway stayed for almost 7 years, the University of San Geronimo and the Floridita Bar-Restaurant, where you will taste a delicious Daiquiri in the shadow of a bronze statue of the famous writer and dance to the rhythms of the music played by a local band.Note: This visit is not indicated for mobility problems and wheelchair users.
